Ahrenkiel, which occurred at 7:50 last evening in a local hospital, Salinas lost another much esteemed old time resident. The deceased was a native of Denmark, born July 16, 1844. He was therefore 84 years old last month. To scores of friends, both young and old, Mr. Ahrenkiel was familiarly known as "Grandpop" Ahrenkiel. He came to Salinas with his family in 1891, and had been a continuous resident here since that time, a period of 37 years. During nearly all of that time he conducted a shoe repairing shop, retiring from business only a few months ago because of the increasing infirmities that come with the advancing years. To mourn his demise the deceased leaves a family of six children. He was the father of Iver H. Ahrenkiel, Salinas; Mrs. Christine Knudsen, Salinas; Mrs. Anna Rhode, Salinas; Mrs. Cora Johansen, Salinas; Mrs. Johanna Rhode, San Jose; and Mrs. Frenzel, San Francisco. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Christian Wierup, of this city, as well as eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Fraternally he was a member of Freja lodge, No. 6, Dania and the Fremad. Mr. Ahrenkiel's funeral has been set for Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Muller mortuary. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. cemetery. Death Notice, from Salinas Index Journal, dated 21 August 1928: DIED--AHRENKIEL--In Salinas, Aug. 19, 1928, Hans J. Ahrenkiel, beloved father of Iver H. Ahrenkiel, Mrs. Christine Knudsen, Mrs. Anna Rhode, Mrs. Cora Johansen, Mrs. Johanna Rhode and Mrs. Frenzel, and brother of Mrs. Christian Wierup, a native of Denmark, aged 84 years, one month and three days. Friends and acquaintances are invited to attend the funeral, which will be held at 2:00 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the Muller mortuary, East Alisal and Pajaro streets. Burial in Odd Fellows' cemetery. From Salinas Index Journal, dated 22 August 1928: Funeral Services For Late H.J. Ahrenkiel--With scores of sorrowing relatives and sympathizing friends in attendance, funeral services were held this afternoon in the chapel of the Muller mortuary for the late Hans J. Ahrenkiel, aged resident of this city who died last Sunday evening. Rev. George McCormick, retired Presbyterian minister, and Rev. Einar B. Dixen, pastor of the Danish Luthern church, officiated. The clergymen were assisted by Mrs. Agnes Smith, vocalist, and Mrs. Julia Jurkin {?}, organist. Mrs. Smith sang feelingly "A Perfect Day", "Nearer, My God,To Thee." The floral tokens of sympathy and esteem were in great profusion. Interment was in Odd Fellows' cemetery, where the body was consigned to earth with the beautiful ritualistic ceremonial of the Dania society, performed by officers and members of Freja No. 6, of which the deceased was a member. Six grandsons acted as pallbearers: Albert Rhode, Holger Rhode, Kenneth Ahrenkiel, Trigg Phillips, Henry Oertly and Lawrence Gallick. |
